Career Breakfasts Feature “Curley” – “Notre Dame” Alums
At an early Monday morning gathering Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School students considering a future in health care welcomed the insights of Edgar Pierre MD, 1982 alumnus of the school. Doctor Pierre, director of Pain Management at the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital was the lead presenter in the school’s 2005-2006 series of career breakfasts.
Dr. Pierre obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California and medical doctorate from the University of Miami School of Medicine where he currently serves as an assistant professor and member of the admissions board. He is the author of a number of publications on burn care and the use of hormones in the treatment of burns.
“Plan for the future and always have a goal,” was Dr. Pierre’s message to the students. After stressing the importance of education, he fielded questions from the audience. Student inquiries included subjects such as overseas medical programs, college preparation and responsibilities and differences of careers in the growing field of health care.
Founded in 1953 as Notre Dame Academy and Archbishop Curley High School, the institutions took on a significant role in defining diversity as a value within the educational community of the City and the State. The first secondary school in Florida to teach black and white students together later welcomed the Pedro Pan Scholars and more recently the Opportunity Scholars. In 1980 the two entities joined on the 4949 NE 2nd Avenue Campus as a co-educational, Catholic, college preparatory school for grades 9 to 12.
Alumnae and alumni have a tradition of returning to their Alma Mater to offer current students an inside perspective on the rewards and challenges of their varied professions. Subsequent breakfasts will focus on careers in law, science, banking, finance, real estate, insurance, engineering, performing arts, broadcasting, professional athletics, business and management – all areas in which ACND alums in the Miami area have attained notable success.
