Ladies of Notre Dame Academy Rededicate their Seal

MIAMI, FL - On May 20, 2006, over forty ladies, parents and former teachers representing three decades of Notre Dame Academy gathered to reminisce and affirm the school’s mission through the rededication of their original school seal now located at the merged Archbishop Curley Notre Dame (ACND) High School campus.

The evening began with a mass celebrated by Fr. David Russell in the ACND chapel and included a variety of traditional Notre Dame Academy songs.  A procession to the seal followed and the ladies were invited to light a candle to symbolize the continued spirit of Notre Dame.  Fr. Russell then blessed the seal and dedicated it at its new location.  A reception immediately followed in the school gardens.

Unearthed and recovered by members of the ACND administration in the late 1990’s, an alum offered his service as a gift in kind and moved the seal to the ACND campus.  It soon became the center piece of the school’s main office entranceway during a renovation project.

In 1953, Archbishop Joseph Hurley of St. Augustine, FL established two new Catholic high schools in South Florida: Archbishop Curley High School for boys and Notre Dame Academy for girls.  In 1960, Archbishop Curley High School and Notre Dame Academy became the first high schools in the state and the first Catholic school in the southern United States to integrate.  In 1981, the two schools united at the 4949 NE 2nd Avenue campus and became known as Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School.

ACND’s Office of Advancement brought together the ladies of Notre Dame Academy for two brunches and the idea of the rededication was born.  In conjunction with the school, a committee of seven Notre Dame graduates coordinated and planned the event.  Due to the large success of the rededication, the school plans on coordinating more such events in the future.
