ACND South Florida Chess Champions

 

Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Prep’s Chess Knights captured first place in the K – 12 Division of the South Florida Regional Championship sponsored by the Florida Chess Association in conjunction with the United States Chess Federation to become South Florida Regional Champions for the second time since 2001.

 

The Champion Knights were led by senior Victor Sierra and sophomore Jeremy Rojas.  Others contributing to the effort were senior Nelson Chan, sophomores William Buxton, Osvaldo Diaz, Brian German, and Terrance Miller, and freshman Marlon De La Cruz.    

 

Tournament host Ferguson High School came in 2nd place, while Archbishop McCarthy High School came in 3rd.  Other contenders included Miami Senior High, as well as Coral Gables, Coral Park, Felix Varela, Killian, Miami Beach, and University.

 

The team has one more local tournament before advancing to the state championship in late March. 

 

Founded in 1998, the Chess team attained the State Championship in 2000 and 2001 and took first place at the National Championship in 2004.

 

Also preparing for state competitions is the ACND Speech and Debate, recipient of the National Forensic League’s Leading Chapter Award for the South Florida District.  Eighteen competitors from the team qualified to compete in Broward on March 3 and 4.    

 

ACND is a Catholic co-educational, college preparatory school serving grades 9 to 12 at 4949 Northeast Second Avenue in Miami’s Upper Eastside on the edge of the Art and Design District.  The school is now considering candidates for 9th and 10th grade.  For information, contact the office of admissions at 305.751.8367 ext 66.
