Miami, FL - After competing against 320 students from 59 schools, the Archbishop Curley

Notre Dame High School Chess Knights brought home two trophies from the 2008 United

States Chess Federation High School Chess Championship held in Atlanta, GA from April 18th

through the 20th

In the under 1200 division, the ACND team finished 10th and individually, senior Osvaldo Diaz

went undefeated to finish in 17th place.  Osvaldo had 4 wins and 3 draws with a total score of

5.5.  Other notable accomplishments came from Brian German with 4.5 points, Marlon De La

Cruz scored 4 points, and Zachary Frishholz accumulated 3 points.  The team has been coached

for the past four years by Dr. Lawrence Goodall, ACND’s Theology and Advanced Placement

European History teacher.

The Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Chess team has earned the title of National Champions twice

in four years.  In 2004, the team placed first in the nation in the under 1200 division and in 2006 they

repeated the championship in the under 900 division.  Most competitors on the ACND team begin

studying chess seriously when they join the team making them true beginners to the game.

Dr. Goodall will be joining the Archbishop Curley Notre Dame faculty, staff and coaches for the

ACND 2008 June Academy.  ACND’s summer program offers junior high students, 6th through

9th grades, a preview of a high school sports program and a variety of enrichment courses in the

areas of the performing arts and science.  June Academy offerings include chess, Tae Kwon Do,

sports, band, performing and visual arts, health care career program, and Chinese.  For more
