Former Georgetown National Champion Basketball Player,
Fred Brown to Speak at Local High School
Miami, FL – Former Georgetown Basketball Star Fred Brown is schedule to speak
at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School, located at 4949 NE 2nd Avenue on
Friday, October 19, 2007 at 12:30 pm.
Brother Patrick Sean Moffett, CFC, Principal, welcomes the Brown visit as another
aspect of the innovative ACND Alumni Breakfast series.
“This speaking engagement affords me the opportunity to give back to the community,”
said Fred Brown, speaking by phone. “I want kids to prepare themselves for life after
basketball. It is indeed a great sport, with tremendous appeal which encompasses
teamwork, but often tends to be short lived. Once the game is over and the team goes
home, you must still maintain a meaningful role in society and I believe that reality eludes
today’s youth.”
Presently, Fred Brown is a Financial Consultant at Smith Barney in Washington, D.C.
Brown is famous for one of the greatest moments of redemption in sports history. In the
1982 National Collegiate Championship Game, he inadvertently threw the ball to Michael
Jordan’s North Carolina teammate, James Worthy, in the closing seconds of the game.
Two seasons later, Brown led the Georgetown Hoyas team to the 1984 National Championship.
Brown went on to become drafted in 1985 to the Atlanta Hawks. He was recently named
to Georgetown’s Top Fifty Players of All Time alongside his former NBA teammate Patrick Ewing.
Archbishop Curley Notre Dame Head Basketball Coach Charles Funk and Athletic Director
Greg Magner are both proponents of building strong character in student athletes so that they
become leaders on and off the court.
The Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School Career Breakfast series invites the school’s
national and local alumni and friends to share their professional experiences with the current student.
