Tuesday, June 17 -- For the
start of the second full week of fun runs, there was turnout of 21
runners and 4 parents...1 assistant coach, 1 former coach, 7 team
members, 1 ACND volleyball player, 6 alums, and 5 St. Rose students.
For the routes we used modified, reversed versions of last Thursday's
run: walkers and short distance - around the field to the golf course to
NE 6th, ¬then right to 103rd and down until 2nd Ave, then right down to
96th and back in through the front entrance of the field house (Due to
some miscommunication and navigational confusion, this route was about
2.3 miles). Long distance -- same start down to 103rd street but down to
N. Miami Ave instead, then all the way up 96th street to the bay where
we waved to water and reversed our way back (c. 4.3) Afterwards, team
members did 8x60 yd strides.
Though the weather was humid, we all stayed dry and enjoyed a leisurely
run. We once again thank the Dominiques for the tasty popsicles and
remember to be careful about what you eat before any run. Please
continue to pray for Br. Corcoran and be thankful for the gift of
running.

Thursday, June 19, 2008 -- With the weather cooperating and being
relatively clear, there was another strong turnout of 22 runners and 6
parents...1 assistant coach, 1 former coach, 9 team members, 3 ACND
students, 4 alums, 5 St. Rose students, and 1 DCS runner.
For the third full week of fun runs we did a Miami Shores Bay run using
the following routes: walkers and short distance - around the field to
the golf course street to NE 6th, ¬then left to 96th. Walkers went
straight to the bay and back (c. 2.5). Short distance turned left on
12th ave and 96th , down all the way to 104th street, reversed back up
12th ave, turned left on 96th to the bay, then continued back up the
field house (c. 3.5). Long distance -- same route as the short group
except ran down and up 104th street (4.5). With Coach Daly's motivation,
some runners even went extra by entering the field house the same way we
came out (c. 5.0)Afterwards, team members did 10x60 yd strides.
Rain or shine, please keep coming to enjoy a good run and show your
support for Br. Corcoran. The fun runs really do mean a lot to him and
there is probably nothing more he would want from us than to be running.
Please continue praying for his speedy recovery and rehab. Try to get
some mileage in over the weekend and as Brother would say, read your
summer reading books!
If anyone is planning on visiting Br. Corcoran, please wait until
further notice as he has been very tired and prefers only the brothers
and family.
For updates, you may call the Brothers' residence at (305) 756-7456.
Updated: June 16, 2008
Thursday, June 12 – Despite
the rainy weather, there was a wonderful turnout of 24 runners and 6
adults (give or take one) to run/walk and show support for Br.
Corcoran….1 assistant coach, 1 former coach, 8 team members, 3 other
ACND students, 6 alums and 5 other middle schoolers. Among the adults in
the walkers group was Miami Herald photographer Ms. Nuri Vallbona who
previously
did an article on Brother’s fun runs. Ms. Tracy Horvath also came
before the run to show her support while Br. De Piro and Br. Moffett
came after chat with the runners. A special thanks also goes out to Mrs.
Dominique who brought popsicles for post-run enjoyment.
We used the traditional second week routes: walkers and short distance -
around the fields to the golf course to NE 6th, then to 96th down until
2nd Ave to 103rd, then up NE 6th to go back the same way (c.2.9); long
distance – same start but down 96th to N. Miami Ave, then to 103rd for
also the same finish (c. 3.4). Afterwards, team members did 8x60 yd
strides.
As we pray for Brother’s speedy recovery, we will continue to have the
regularly scheduled fun runs throughout the summer. If you have further
questions, please contact Assistant coach Julia Cilona at
Julia.Cilona@gmail.com
Tuesday, June 17 – same routes as last Thursday. And remember, as
Brother always says, “Run so as to win!”
13th Annual
Fun Run Series Starts June 5th
The
Cross-Country team invites you to join our group fun runs on Tuesdays and
Thursdays during June and July, starting Thursday, June 5th.
We run at 6:30 p.m. from the Miami Shores Community Center on 97th
Street and Park Avenue.
The runs are
relaxed, with varying routes and distances. We usually split into three
groups: walkers, short distance, and longer distance. We welcome people
of all ages and ability levels, whether they are connected with ACND or
not: adults, alums, high school students, middle school students,
parents, friends of parents, ACND athletes, ACND students who are not
athletes, friends of ACND students from other schools, people from the
neighborhood, anyone who wants to join us.
The runs are
a good way for everyone to get some exercise or to get into condition for
other sports or just to get away from the pressures of a tough day.

Preparing
for the '08 Season
In addition
to the fun run series, which is not in any way mandatory for any
cross-country hopeful or returning runner, I have distributed a training
schedule to all who came to the sign-up meeting. As I stressed at that meeting: "CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE WON IN THE SUMMER!!!!"
You owe it
to yourself and to the team to be faithful to the minimum fitness mileage
levels established on the hand-out. We do have very
promising prospects for improvement and real accomplishment next year, but only if YOU work your hardest for the team.
Also, please
remember that official practice begins on August 18th.
Do not dare come near me that day if you have not already submitted
the necessary paperwork: FHSAA medical forms, parental consent
forms, insurance forms.
Welcome to
Our New Assistant Coach
We extend a
very warm welcome to Mrs. Julia Cilona, who will be our assistant coach
this season. Mrs. Cilona comes to ACND from Ohio, where she ran
cross-country in her high school days. Mrs. Cilona is joining the ACND faculty as a member of the Foreign Language Department.
She will be an invaluable help in our training and as our finish line
official at all home meets. She also gives us an extra driver so that we can take more runners on our "Scenic Saturday" Runs.
