FINE
ARTS
Philosophy
The
Fine Arts Department at AC-ND strives to instill in its students an
appreciation and love for music and theater.
It is our hope that through choral and band instruction,
independent musicians who are capable of performing music throughout their
lives (as professionals or amateurs in church or community choirs, bands
or orchestras) will be developed. By
studying and listening to classical music, attending live performances of
opera, musicals, dramas, and orchestra concerts the cultural lives of our
students will be enriched and future supporters of the Arts will be
created. Through Speech and
Drama courses students will be encouraged to overcome their fear of public
speaking and refine oral and dramatic interpretation.
Reading
and writing are integrated into the Fine Arts curriculum through research
projects utilizing information found on the Internet.
Summaries and critiques of live performances give additional
practice in organizing thoughts and expressing valid evaluation of what is
seen.
Although
it has been proven that the study of music has positive effects on other
disciplines such as Mathematics and Reading skills, the study of music for
its own sake is a worthy endeavor.

One
half credit of Fine Arts is required for graduation, however students
who have room in their schedules for an extra elective can take
additional classes. Choir
or Band classes teach the same basic information about music theory, but
specific musical selections vary each year.
No
differentiation of class levels is apparent in music classes.
A Foundations student has as much opportunity for success as an
Honors student. One of the
greatest aspects of Fine Arts classes is precisely that all
students can feel a sense of accomplishment in creating something
beautiful through performances.
Department
Grading Policy
Fine
Arts courses are graded on a variety of criteria: the largest percentage
of the grade is achieved through participation (thus affording any
student who gives a good effort an opportunity to succeed), tests,
projects, essays, attendance at live performances.
