Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice

ACND is conducted by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, founded in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice.

Br. Edmund I. Rice was an extraordinary man: by today's standards, a millionaire; a widower at a young age, whose daughter was mentally impaired as a result of an accident.

Br. Edmund Rice left his prosperous business life - after securing his daughter's well-being - to care for the poor Irish youth.

Br. Edmund Rice went against the English law that declared illegal the education of Irish children.

Br. Edmund Rice invited other gentlemen friends to join him in the pursuit of his dream. Two congregations of men developed from this initial group.

Br. Edmund Rice's Brothers believe that Catholic education should be marked by a willingness to critique and, when necessary, confront the excesses and ills of our society and be committed to prophetic action on behalf of the materially poor.

At ACND, the spirit of Edmund Rice is alive. Come and share his dream with us!
